Dapol N Gauge Class 58 – Model Releases and Catalogue Numbers

The British Rail Class 58 has been represented in N gauge over the years, most notably by Dapol, who produced two generations of ready-to-run models of the class. These models ensured that the Class 58 was represented in N gauge, one of the most space-efficient and increasingly popular modelling scales in the UK.

The First Dapol Release

Dapol first released their N gauge Class 58 models in 2010, producing a range of locomotives in several liveries including Railfreight red stripe, Railfreight triple grey, Mainline blue and EWS. These models featured directional lighting, a 5-pole motor with twin flywheels, and were DCC-ready with an 18-pin socket in later releases.

At the time, the model was well received and allowed N gauge modellers to include the Class 58 on their layouts without the need for kit building or heavy modification. The range covered a good selection of running numbers and liveries, allowing the class to be modelled across multiple eras.

The Second Generation Model

More than a decade later, Dapol announced a completely new second-generation Class 58 model in 2022, featuring an all-new tooling to modern standards. This new model included a redesigned chassis, improved detailing, finer bodyshell tooling, factory-fitted lighting functions and provision for DCC sound, bringing the model up to the standards expected of modern N gauge locomotives.

The introduction of a new tooling demonstrated that there was still strong demand for the Class 58 in model form, many years after the first model had been released.

The Dapol N gauge Class 58 has appeared in several production batches since its original release, covering a broad selection of liveries carried by the prototype locomotives throughout their working lives.

Broadly speaking, the models fall into two main groups: the earlier ND-103 series, produced between 2009 and 2012, and the later 2D-058 series, released in 2022 with updated mechanisms and electronics.

Summary

Across both production runs, Dapol has produced the N gauge Class 58 in a wide spread of liveries reflecting the principal stages of the prototype fleet’s working life.

  • Railfreight Red Stripe
  • Railfreight Triple Grey (Coal Sector)
  • Mainline Blue
  • EWS Maroon & Yellow
  • EWS Maroon & Gold
  • ACTS European livery

The later 2D-058 series models are mechanically superior and offer more modern DCC features, while the earlier ND-103 series remains especially popular with collectors because of the broader spread of locomotive numbers and liveries released during that first run.

Collector’s Notes

For collectors looking to assemble a representative Class 58 fleet in model form, a balanced collection might include the following:

  • One Railfreight Red Stripe locomotive
  • One Triple Grey Coal Sector locomotive
  • One Mainline locomotive
  • One EWS locomotive
  • The ACTS export locomotive special edition

Taken together, that combination gives a good overview of the class’s working life, from British Rail service through privatisation and on to European operation.

The earlier ND-103 models remain highly collectable, particularly where they represent liveries or locomotive numbers not yet repeated in the later tooling updates.
