Class 58 Models | OO Gauge - Heljan
HELJAN – Class 58 – OO Gauge
Heljan’s OO gauge Class 58 marked an important return for the class in ready-to-run 4mm scale, bringing a more modern, higher-detail model to the market and laying the foundations for later EFE Rail releases.

The British Rail Class 58 returned to the OO gauge market in 2007 when Heljan announced and released the first ready-to-run OO gauge models of the locomotive. This was a significant moment for enthusiasts of the class, as it marked the first time the Class 58 had been produced as a modern ready-to-run OO gauge model with a high level of detail and accuracy.
For many modellers, these releases represented a major step forward from the older OO gauge options then available, while also helping to renew wider interest in the prototype class.
The First Release – 2007
In October 2007, Heljan released computer-generated images of the six chosen Class 58 locomotives that were in production and expected to reach retailers later that year. The models showed a promising level of detail, including variations such as engine room door handles, NRN roof equipment, cab ventilators and detailed bogies, including sandboxes.
The models were produced in two versions to reflect differences within the real Class 58 fleet.
Version 1 Locos
CP3 bogies, without bodyside door handles.
- 58001 – Railfreight red stripe livery
- 58004 – Mainline grey livery
- 58014 “Didcot Power Station” – Trainload Coal livery
Version 2 Locos
CP3a bogies, with bodyside door panel handles.
- 58037 – Railfreight red stripe livery
- 58047 – EWS livery
- 58050 “Toton Traction Depot” – Mainline blue livery
The models were released towards the end of 2007, with a launch around the Warley Exhibition and a recommended retail price of approximately £89 at the time.
One error noted on the early promotional images was the incorrect Stewarts Lane depot plaque shown on Trainload Coal liveried 58014, which should have carried the Toton depot cooling towers symbol. This was one of several detail points noticed by enthusiasts ahead of the models reaching general release.
The Second Release – 2008
Following the success of the initial models, Heljan announced a second batch of Class 58 models as part of their 2008 production programme, with release planned for August 2008. This second run expanded the range and included:
Version 1 Locos
CP3 bogies, without bodyside door handles.
- 58009 – Mainline grey
- 58024 – EWS maroon and gold
Version 2 Locos
CP3a bogies, with bodyside door panel handles.
- 58041 – Original Railfreight red stripe
- 58048 “Coventry Colliery” – Trainload Coal
This second batch helped broaden the range of available liveries and running numbers, allowing modellers to represent more members of the class across different periods of their working lives.
Review and Group Involvement
At the time of their release, the Class 58 Locomotive Group carried out a detailed review of the first batch of Heljan Class 58 models following their general release. This review was later published in Traction magazine and also appeared in full as a supplement to the March issue of Red Diamond.
The review was later made available in the models section of the Class 58 Locomotive Group website, reflecting the group’s close interest in ensuring the class was represented accurately in model form as well as in preservation.
A Model That Reintroduced the Class 58 to OO Gauge
The Heljan OO gauge models played a major role in reintroducing the Class 58 to the OO gauge market in ready-to-run form and set a new standard for the model of the class at the time. These models later formed the basis for the updated EFE Rail Class 58 models released from 2020 onwards, meaning that the Heljan tooling continued to represent the Class 58 in OO gauge for many years.
From a preservation perspective, models such as these play an important role in keeping the story of the Class 58 alive. For many enthusiasts, interest in the real locomotives begins with models, and accurate models help ensure that important locomotive classes continue to be remembered and represented.
