Class 58050

Class 58050

58050

58050 was a significant part of railway history; it was the last diesel-electric locomotive built by BREL and the last locomotive built at Doncaster Works. It was because of its historical significance that the loco was marked for the national collection by the Railway Heritage Committee in 2002.

The loco was originally fitted with SEPEX wheel slip equipment, which was removed before the loco entered service in March 1987.

58050 was named Toton Traction Depot in May 1987. It spent the majority of its working life hauling MGR wagons in from collieries to power stations in and around the Midlands and covered 582 miles working as a passenger loco, before being withdrawn on the 5th August 2002.

The loco was exported to France on the 17th November 2004, where it stayed until the 26th October 2006. It was then exported to Spain on the 18th September 2008, and the locomotive worked alongside several of its classmates on the Spanish high-speed lines across the south of the country.

In 2012, nine Class 58s in Spain were transferred to Transfesa ownership, while DB Cargo retained ownership of three locos, which included 050. The 58s last worked in Spain in 2016, after which they were placed into storage. 050, along with three other fleet members, was moved to a depot in Albacete, Spain.

The loco remained at Albacete until 2025, and despite many attempts by DB Cargo, the Railway Heritage Committee, and the Class 58 Locomotive Group to bring the locomotive back to the UK. DB Cargo announced that, due to the presence of asbestos in the locomotive, it would not be possible to export the locomotive back to the UK, and the safest option was to dispose of it. Therefore, 58050, alongside 025, 027, and 041, was disposed of in 2025.

A nameplate carried by 050 was donated to the Doncaster Danum Museum by DB Cargo and was unveiled in November 2025.
